Suspect tracked down by officer and police dog after residents were 'threatened' during Jesmond disturbance

A man is due in court after residents in Jesmond were allegedly threatened during a disturbance.

Shortly after 1.15am on Sunday, police were called to the Otterburn Villas area after reports that occupants had been threatened.

Officers were deployed to the area and began searching for the suspect.

After almost three hours there had been no sighting but PC Vicky Lott and her dog Zeeke were determined to track him down.

After finally spotting the suspect, the officer called for back-up and colleagues arrived within minutes – making an arrest and also seizing a knife.

Superintendent Sam Rennison, who leads Northumbria Police’s Operations Department, said: “Thanks to the determination of PC Lott and Zeeke we were able to bring a suspect into custody.

“Handlers and police dogs are well versed in search missions and locating suspects – but sometimes you also need a little bit of tenacity which they showed here.

“Our officers come to work every day determined to make a difference to the communities we are proud and privileged to serve.”

A 28-year-old Gateshead man has now been charged with a public order offence.

He is due to appear in court next month.
