A suspect has been taken into custody following a manhunt launched after a police officer in Alabama was shot dead.

Another officer was critically wounded and a third injured while on a “routine domestic call” at a trailer park in south Auburn, Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said.

“When the officers arrived they encountered gunfire,” Mr Harris said.

“One was airlifted from the scene and he later died. The other two were transported. One is critical.”

The suspect was identified as Grady Wayne Wilkes, 29, who was seen wearing body armour and a helmet.

He was believed to be a serious risk to the public.

Auburn University warned its students to stay away from the mobile home park, which sits about five miles away from the campus.

No motive for the shooting was given.
