Sacramento police on Saturday released sketches of two suspects in the stabbing of Spencer Stone, the US airman who helped foil a terror attack on a French train.

Stone was stabbed multiple times in his upper body in the California city on 8 October, in what authorities described as “nightlife-related incident” that was not related to the train attack. He survived.

On a GoFundMe webpage launched on Friday, Stone’s brother detailed his injuries.

“He was stabbed four times,” Everett Stone wrote, posting pictures of his brother in a hospital bed with a large and vivid scar down his chest.

“Once in the heart, once in the left lung which collapsed the lung, the liver, and in the back. He had to have open heart surgery to save his life from the knife wound to his heart. Extensive medical surgery.”

Everett Stone said the page was seeking financial help for the Stone family and “some very specific personal security issues that the family as a whole is concerned with”.

Spencer Stone’s medical care, he wrote, was being covered by the US military.

Stone, his friends Anthony Sadler and Alek Skarlatos and British businessman Chris Norman helped subdue Ayoub El-Khazzani, a 25-year-old gunman who attempted an attack on a high-speed train in France on Friday 21 August.

A Franco-American professor, Mark Moogalian, was wounded. Stone was injured by a box cutter wielded by the attacker, and had part of a thumb re-attached.

With Sadler, Skarlatos and Norman, Stone was awarded the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest honour, by President François Hollande.

A statement issued by police with the sketches on Saturday said Stone “was in the area of 21st Street and K Street when a physical altercation ensued with a group of unknown subjects”.

The police statement said surveillance video of the suspects had been collected, showing them leaving the area in a Toyota Camry car dating from 2009 to 2012.

“The physical descriptors are two Asian or Filipino, male adults wearing white shirts and blue jeans,” the statement said. “This continues to be an active and ongoing investigation.”
