Suspect named as police charge man with attempted murder on Southport promenade

A man accused of stabbing a man several times in Southport can today be named after police charged him with attempted murder.

The shocking attack is thought to have followed a drunken brawl only yards from a busy music festival on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Southport Promenade at 3.40pm after a man in his 40s was found with stab wounds opposite the the Royal Clifton Hotel.

The victim remains in what police termed "a serious but stable" condition in hospital today.

Now police have revealed they have charged a man over the stabbing.

Colin Howard, 43, from Royal Terrace in Southport has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a sharply pointed article in a public place.

Howard will appear at South Sefton Magistrates Court this morning.

The incident happened only yards from where hundreds of people were enjoying Southport Music Festival in the sunshine.
