Suspect named as man steals from pensioner in money scam

A suspect was today named by police after a pensioner had her bank card stolen in a scam as she shopped on the Wirral.

The victim, a woman in her 70s, was at the mobility shop of Ableworld Mobility and Stairlifts in Birkenhead when she was targeted.

Police said the pensioner was approached by a man inside the store in Park Road North.

A spokesman said the man "reportedly asked her to change money".

It was only later that the woman released her bank card was missing and suspected to have been swiped during the exchange in the shop.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "At around 4.30pm on Tuesday 13 April, a woman in her 70s was at Ableworld Mobility and Stairlifts in Park Road North when she was approached by a man who reportedly asked her to change money. The victim later realised that her card had been stolen."

CCTV enquiries were carried and a man was arrested.

Today police confirmed a man has been charged over the incident.

Viorel Voinea, 42 of Grove Road, Wallasey Village has been charged with theft from a person.

He was due to appear at Wirral Adult Remand Court today, Friday, April 15.
