Suspect named after spate of abusive 999 calls

A man from Widnes has been charged in connection with a spate of abusive 999 calls.

Officers charged Luke Barber of Alfred Street in Widnes, in connection with abusive calls made to the police 999 system.

The 30-year-old was arrested on Thursday, July 29 and taken into custody.

He has since been charged with persistently making use of 999 service to cause annoyance.

The charge relates to numerous calls made to 999 on Thursday, July 29 at 11.40am.

Barber was released on conditional bail and is due to appear at Warrington Magistrates Court on September, 1.

A spokesperson from Cheshire Police said: "The 999 number supports people who are in danger or are witnessing a crime take place.

"The time lost dealing with inappropriate 999 calls can be the difference between life and death for other callers with emergencies trying to get through."

People who are a victim of crime should contact Cheshire Police by calling 999 if there is an immediate threat to life or property or 101 for non-emergencies.
