Suspect named after policeman racially abused and attacked in West Bridgford

A man suspected of hurling racist and homophic abuse at a police officer before assaulting him during a street disturbance in West Bridgford has been charged.

Nottinghamshire Police said the incident happened after officers were called to "a report of a street disturbance" in Melton Road "where they swiftly arrested a man" at around 7.30pm on Wednesday, October 6.

A Nottinghamshire Police police spokesman said: "As an officer tried to calm things down it is alleged he was verbally abused, including racist and homophobic language, and also threatened."

Police said the officer was also assaulted.

The spokesman added: "It is further alleged the officer had his foot stamped on, causing him pain, while he was dealing with a suspect."

Joseph Daultrey, aged 40, of no fixed address, was due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Friday, October 8) charged with common assault of an emergency worker, racially-aggravated public order, threats to kill and criminal damage.

Police have said they will not tolerate assaults on emergency workers and take a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of hate crime.

And the force has made a rallying call for people to call out hate crime in all its forms as an annual national awareness campaign began today, Saturday, October 9.

The force is working closely together with its partners, including Nottingham City Council, to deliver a range of activities in support of National Hate Crime Awareness Week.
