Suspect named after knifeman threatened to 'blow up house', sparking school evacuation

A 38-year-old suspect has been named by police after a man caused chaotic scenes in Wallasey when he reportedly threatened to "blow up a house".

Armed police swooped on Darlington Street in Wallasey just before noon on Friday following reports of a concern for safety of a man in a house.

Gas engineers joined emergency services at the scene and the incident saw nearby Egremont Primary School put on lockdown with pupils being told to "hide under tables" before children and staff were safely evacuated to Wallasey Town Hall.

Multiple roads were cordoned off in the nearby area and neighbouring properties evacuated.

Witnesses said the man was reported to have threatened to "blow up a house".

Today police named a man they have charged in relation to the dramatic scenes.

He added: "Tony Charles Gath, 38 years, of Devonshire Road, Oxton was later arrested and charged with affray, burglary, threat to damage/destroy property, causing a public nuisance and criminal damage."

He was remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court today.
