Suspect named after front door of house set on fire at night

Armed police swooped on a residential street after a man started making threats and trying to torch the door of a house.

The officers were called in response to the frightening scenes at the property close to Dovecot Park on Wednesday night.

Merseyside Police said armed police were sent to the scene in Pilch Lane at around 8pm.

A spokesman said it followed "reports of a man attempting to set fire to the front door, and making threats".

Damage was caused to the door but thankfully nobody was injured as a result of the arson attempt.

Police detained a man nearby, who was taken to a police station for questioning.

Today Merseyside Police named a man they have charged in connection with the incident.

Warren Hughes, 27, of Beechburn Crescent Roby is charged with attempted arson, harassment and possession of a knuckle duster and knife.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "At around 8pm, officers were called to home on Pilch Lane to reports of a man attempting to set fire to the front door, and making threats.

"Armed police attended and detained a man nearby, who was taken to a police station for questioning."

Hughes was today due to appear at South Sefton Magistrates Court.
