‘Suspect’ item found at Scots recycling centre sparks emergency response with police in attendance

A recycling centre in Edinburgh has been closed after an ‘unidentified object’ was discovered.

The alarm was raised by staff at the Seafield Household Waste Recycling Centre in the capital on Thursday morning.

Police remain at the scene while a specialist team is drafted in to examine the item and whether it poses a danger to the public.

Traffic has been diverted from the immediate area with delays reported on surrounding rounds.

Lothian Buses said their services have been affected due to the closure of Seafield Road.

They said: “Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve Seafield Road and Seafield Street and are instead operating via Salamander Street, Bernard Street, The Shore, Henderson Street, Kirkgate and Duke street back on route at Easter Road until further notice.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: "Officers are currently in attendance at a recycling centre in Seafield, Edinburgh, following a report of an unidentified item being found.

"A cordon is in place while specialist teams attend to assess the item."

A City of Edinburgh Council spokesperson said: “Seafield HWRC is currently closed due to an ongoing incident and the need to ensure the safety of site users and our own staff.

"We’re working with Police Scotland and will provide updates on our social media channels as soon as possible.

"Customers who had appointments booked are being contacted directly to allow them to arrange new appointments.”
