Suspect Identified In Doral Shooting, Exchanged Gunfire With Police

New Mexico unarmed responders struggle to cut police shootings

Authorities have identified the man suspected of killing a security guard and injuring seven other people in a shooting in Doral, a city about five miles west of Miami. The suspected shooter, 37-year-old Jamal Wayne Wood, was killed during an exchange of gunfire with police officers at the scene, the Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed.

The incident took place around 3:30 a.m. following an altercation among patrons at a local establishment. A security guard, identified as 23-year-old George Alejandro Castellanos, intervened but was fatally shot by the gunman. Doral police officers, who were present at the commercial establishment, engaged the shooter in a gunfight.

During the confrontation, a Doral Police Department officer was also shot and injured. The injured officer, a four-year veteran of the force, applied a tourniquet immediately after being struck. In total, six bystanders were wounded during the exchange of gunfire between the gunman and the police.

One victim was transported to Jackson Trauma Center in critical condition, while another was taken to Kendall Regional Trauma Center in critical condition. The remaining four victims were reported to be in stable condition. The Miami-Dade Police Department and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are collaborating on the investigation.

It was revealed that a year ago, Doral police officers had participated in an active shooter drill at the same establishment where the tragic shooting occurred. Witnesses in the vicinity described the harrowing experience of hearing the gunshots, mistaking them for fireworks initially, before realizing the severity of the situation.
