Suspect hunted by Greater Manchester police after attempted rape of woman in All Saints Park

Police are hunting a suspected sex attacker after he allegedly attempted to rape a woman in the early hours of the morning.

The 19-year-old was set upon as she walked home from work near All Saints Park, near Oxford Road, Manchester at 5.30am on Saturday.

She was grabbed from behind by the suspect and struggled with him as he tried to rape her, police said.

The alleged attacker was then disturbed and ran off.

Greater Manchester Police have issued an image of a man they would like to speak to, who is pictured wearing a white printed t-shirt and jeans.

Inspector Andy Smith said: "I recognise the concern this incident may cause due to its proximity to the universities but I would like to provide reassurance.

"We have increased police patrols in the area, and the victim is being supported by specially trained officers.

"We work very closely with our partners, including the universities and student unions, to improve student safety and to ensure the appropriate support is available to victims of crime. This important work will continue and all members of the community should be able to live their lives without fear of this type of crime.

"I am determined to find out who is responsible and would ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call us.

"An image has been issued of a man we would like to speak to and I would ask anyone who recognises him to get in touch. I would also make a direct plea to the man himself to come forward so we can eliminate him from our enquiries."

Police ask anyone with information to phone them on 0161 856 1911 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
