Suspect held in attack on woman outside police HQ

A man suspected of attacking a university student outside police headquarters in Bangkok has been detained for questioning.

Traffic police in Pathumwan apprehended the man at Hua Lamphong station on Friday after his picture, captured from surveillance camera footage, was circulated.

The man was being questioned at Pathumwan police station about the attack. He appeared to be mentally disturbed, Daily News online reported.

The suspect was identified as Katcharin Klaijaem, 39, a native of Phitsanulok. 

He could also face other charges of assaulting people, police said.

A man was seen in the surveiilance camera video approaching Jaruporn Nantakit, a Kasetsart University student, from behind and hitting her on the head with what appeared to be a long stick, in front of the Royal Thai Police head office on Wednesday. He briefly chased her as she ran away, trying to hit her again, and then turned about and walked off.

Her mother later posted the video online, seeking help from the public in identifying him
