A suspect device and two boxes of ammunition were discovered after a search on a mountain in Co Galway.
The items were found after a search of lands at Castledaly on Tuesday afternoon.
The army bomb squad attended the scene at around 2pm after the discovery.
A statement said: "As part of an intelligence led operation Gardaí from Gort and Loughrea conducted a search of lands at Castledaly, Co Galway this morning, Tuesday April 28, 2020.
"At approximately 2pm Gardaí found two boxes of ammunition and a suspect device during the search operation.
"The Army Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit attended the scene and made safe the suspect device. All items seized will be subject to technical examination.
"Investigations are ongoing."
