Suso Santana retires as Hearts Scottish Cup hero bows out a Tenerife legend with tribute match to come

Former Hearts star Suso Santana has retired from football at the age of 36, ending a 10-year love affair to cement his legendary status at CD Tenerife.

But he's set to star for the island club one last time - in a testimonial match.

Tenerife are set to celebrate their centenary year in 2022 and Suso admitted his regret at not being able celebrate it as a player.

However he's set to play in one final game to celebrate his own service to his boyhood side against "a rival according to what he deserves," as stated by club president Miguel Concepción.

Suso's only other permanent club was Hearts where he lifted the Scottish Cup in his last match in maroon, winning a penalty to help the Jambos on their way to a 5-1 win over Hibs.

That could put Robbie Neilson's team in the frame to be his favoured opposition in his send-off - although covid travel restrictions would make it unviable at the moment for the Edinburgh club to visit a foreign country for the sake of a tribute match.

Suso is likely to stay at the club in a non-playing capacity and he said after announcing his retirement: "I would have liked things to be different. But that is what has happened. I have felt privileged. I have been here for many seasons. I am happy with how my football career has been.

"I had a meeting with (sporting director) Juan Carlos Cordero and he told me that I was not in the plans for the next season.

"I would have liked to be in the Centennial and retire with my people.

"It has been a very complicated week - my son doesn't want me to retire. But I don't see myself playing in another shirt other than Tenerife's. It took me a lot to get here and I've worn it for 337 games.

"My intention was to retire here and I'm happy with the career I've had."
