Susanna Reid wanted to 'tear hair out' when son missed school due to Covid isolation

Susanna Reid has opened up about the stress of her sons missing days of school due to them being forced to go into Covid isolation.

The mum-of-three hosted Good Morning Britain alongside Martin Lewis on Tuesday when the conversation turned to reports that there are currently 250,000 pupils off school due to being in isolation.

Susanna and Martin invited MP and Schools Minister Nick Gibbs onto the ITV show to discuss the possibility of the currently policy being lifted before the summer holidays.

"Are you suggesting that that might bring in a change before the end of this term?" Susanna asked Mr Gibbs.

"Because I know that some parents are at their wit’s end. Even having one child off isolating once for 10 days, considering the extent of the damage to our children’s education over the pandemic and the period of time they have gone without proper education in many cases."

She continued: "But to have them isolating again is so detrimental, is there any chance you could bring that in before term ends?"

However, Mr Gibbs avoided answering the question and replied: "These are part of rafter measures including ventilation and hygiene and staggered lunch breaks in schools to try and make sure that we keep children safe."

But Susanna was having none of it and pressed: "No, sorry my question was... I mean I’ve just had a child off self-isolating and you tear your hair out when it happens because he's already had his GCSE cancelled.

"He's had a tough year - like the whole generation of children has had - and then they face just before their assessments, they face another 10 days of isolation.

"I worry that perhaps they go back into school, there's another positive Covid case and off they are again! Is there any chance you might change that policy before the end of term?" she added.

But Mr Gibbs still failed to answer the question properly and said they were still waiting for a trial to be completed to see if daily testing could be a way to avoid the 10 day isolation period.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
