Susanna Reid slams Piers Morgan for saying women shouldn’t wear ‘tacky’ crop tops

Susanna Reid and Charlotte Hawkins took on Piers Morgan after her claimed women shouldn’t wear crop tops, claiming they look “tacky”.

The Good Morning Britain presenters got into a heated debate over the clothing after former editor-in-chief of British Vogue Alexandra Shulman criticised Danish supermodel Helena Christensen for wearing a black bustier.

Morgan claimed Christensen looked “hot” before slamming women who opt to wear crop tops.

“I think she looks hot there. She’s a supermodel and she’s wearing a hot look,” he said. “I don’t like crop tops. I think they’re all tacky for any age.”

Fuming: Charlotte Hawkins and Susanna Reid took on Piers Morgan (ITV)

Hawkins hit back: “How can you say that’s OK and crop tops aren’t? Women should be able to wear what they want without people like you saying ‘actually you shouldn’t wear that’.”

Attempting to defend himself, Morgan argued: “For me, purely for me it’s an aesthetic thing.”

Reid also lambasted him, saying: “I don’t think there’s an age at which you shouldn’t be able to wear anything.”

Morgan said he is tired of men telling women they look good, saying he has become more “ruthless” in giving an honest opinion.

He said: “We’ve been conditioned to say ‘you look great, darling’ because it’s just not worth the effort. I’ve become quite ruthless. I just give an honest opinion.”

It is not the first time the breakfast TV co-hosts have been at loggerheads over crop tops, with Morgan previously criticising Felicity Kendal, 72, for wearing a dress which exposed her midriff.

“It’s entirely about and up to the woman,” Reid said at the time, before Morgan added: “A woman can wear whatever you like as can men, but if you look ridiculous then it’s entirely up to us to say you look ridiculous.”

He went on to accuse Reid of not wanting to admit that wearing a crop top is “inappropriate and a little bit tacky”. She accused him of “mansplaining”.

Good Morning Britain is on ITV, weekdays at 6am
