Susanna Reid's heartbreaking battle with mum guilt and fears over sons leaving home

Susanna Reid has opened up about her heartbreaking battle with mum guilt and her fears about her three sons leaving home.

The Good Morning Britain star, 50, is mum to three boys Sam, 18, Finn, 16, and Jack, 15, with her ex Dominic Cotton.

In an interview with You magazine, Susanna opened up about life as a working mum and confessed she feels pangs of guilt about not being around more when the kids were young.

She said: "There are moments when you think: 'Why was I not present when they were tiny?'

"I was around a lot for them, but sometimes you can regret you weren't there playing with them every single moment of every single day.

"You have that kind of guilt. Yet now I'm able to have a more grown-up, funny, chatty relationship with them, where they’re hugely independent but they still need you. That's lovely."

Her eldest son Sam went off to university this year, and Susanna admits she cried when he left.

She's now worried about battling empty nest syndrome as her younger two are going to be leaving home too in the coming years.

Susanna added: "I did obviously cry when we dropped him [Sam] off [at university].

"And it’s an emotional time. The thing I found even more emotional was realising he’s on a string of three.

"When he goes, the next one goes, then the next one. I thought: 'This is the start of three or four years with all my ducklings leaving, then there’s going to be the empty nest.'

"I find that really hard."
