Susanna Reid pokes fun at senior Labour MP after he suffers blunder live on GMB

Susanna Reid was quick to poke fun at a senior Labour MP on Monday's Good Morning Britain after he suffered an 'embarrassing' technical blunder.

During a discussion about the rise of Covid cases in Europe, the TV presenter announced that they would be crossing over live to Jonathan Ashworth.

"Let's talk to the Shadow Health Secretary about this," mother-of-three Susanna began as the camera cut to the MP at his home in Leicester.

"Very good morning to you Mr Ashworth," Susanna continued, but it was pretty obvious that Mr Ashworth had no idea he was already live on the tele.

As Susanna began asking him a Covid-related question, he was seen running his hands through his hair in anticipation of the cameras rolling.

"I don't think he can hear us, he's doing his hair at the moment," Adil commented.

"That's a little unfair of us," Susanna then said, as Adil continued: "Mr Ashworth, you look great! Probably a bit unfair having him on, he doesn't know he's on.

"Can you hear us now?" Adil probed as Mr Ashworth suddenly announced: "Oh hello, sorry!"

"Your hair looks fantastic this morning," Adil then said, as Mr Ashworth replied: "Fabulous, fabulous! I'm so pleased! How embarrassing!"

"To be honest, it could have been a lot worse couldn't it?!" Susanna then interjected, as the MP replied: "What do you think I do in my kitchen in the morning?!"

The blunder comes after Mr Ashworth broke down in a recent TV interview as he spoke about his father's death from alcoholism.

The 43-year-old had to pause to wipe away tears during a TV interview in which he told GB News host and former Labour MP Gloria De Piero: "I had a difficult time growing up."

Speaking fondly of his father, who died in 2010, aged just 61, "He was sort of a great character.

"I loved being in his company but he just couldn't help but allow himself to be gripped by drink and alcohol."

At his lowest ebb, Mr Ashworth said his father had would drink a bottle of Canadian Club whiskey a day.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV Hub.
