Susanna Reid grills MP after Boris Johnson's alleged 'let the bodies pile high' comment

On ITV's Good Morning Britain today tensions rose as host Susanna Reid and Adil Ray grilled Ben Wallace MP.

Following claims made by the Daily Mail, that Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that he would rather "let the bodies pile high in their thousands" than see another lockdown, Susanna insisted she needed to know if it was true.

This morning Mr Wallace told Sky News the claim was "not true", while Number 10 said the newspaper report was "just another lie".

Susanna pointed out that some people might not agree that Boris Johnson had acted swiftly enough in his reaction to the pandemic.

Susanna said: "A number of people would say actually he took the wrong decisions at the wrong time.

"One of which might have been the decision to close borders very late, isn't the answer to this to order an enquiry?

"If we have a Prime Minister who is capable of saying, 'let the bodies pile high in their thousands,' we need to know whether that is true or not."

Ben Wallace said: "Well, the government has always said it will have an inquiry into this pandemic, but the time to have it is not in the middle of it.

"Absolutely, there is nothing to fear from having an enquiry about it.

"And as you say, about the borders, you can equally say that because he has led from the front on the vaccine programme.

"And today is good news, 62% of adults are now vaccinated. Over half the British population is vaccinated because he led from the front.

As Ben Wallace continued to speak on the vaccination efforts in the UK and how the British government 'led from the front' Susanna sternly cut in.

Susanna said: "Late to lockdown in the first place, which we know would have cost lives.

"Late to lockdown in the second place and resistance to a third lockdown."

Viewers of the show took to Twitter, commending Susanna for her interview.

@johnhorneartist said: "A great interview by ever beautiful Susanna and by Adil this morning of Ben Wallace MP from Portsmouth, Hampshire on GMB, it was a credit to them both. GMB at its best."

One fan of the show, @neodawson36, said: "Need an inquiry ASAP".
