The Good Morning Britain host, 49, recalled the sickening incident that took place during her daily walk during a discussion with Doctor Hilary on Thursday morning's episode of the ITV show.

The broadcaster explained: "When I went out walking the other day, a runner ran past me and then coughed and then spat."

Susanna continued, as she asked Doctor Hilary for advice: "It is normal for runners to do that in normal situations. It is not particularly pleasant. Surely right now, it is spreading the virus."

Always the voice of reason, Dr Hilary replied: "When you are running you produce more saliva and you do see runners spit the saliva away.

"Of course it is coming from the mouth and throat and potentially if you are carrying the virus the virus would exist on the ground or wherever for unto a few hours."

He added: "It is not a nice habit and something to be discouraged but it is not a major threat."

Elsewhere in the show hosts Susanna and Ben Shephard interviewed Director for Health Protection and Medical Director for Public Health England Doctor Paul Cosford.

Viewers were frustrated by the presenters as they spoke to the expert over the video link and continued to "talk over" and interrupt him and took to Twitter to vent their frustration.

One fumed: "Susanna Reid rudely talking over the professional guest. What a terrible interviewing technique!!! We're trying to listen to the expert!!"

Dr Hilary said it was a bad habit but not a major threat (ITV)

Another echoed: " @GMB For gods sake let people answer the questions you ask..... STOP talking over people."

"Watching Susanna Reid ask a professor a question that was so long winded and then when he tries to answer she interrupts him, can you let the professor speak we don’t want to hear you. You are as bad as Piers Morgan", added a wound up watcher.

An irritated viewer typed on the micro-blogging site: " @GMB talking over the professor while interviewing him was extremely irratating as we wanted to hear his responses."
