Susanna Reid has been applauded by Good Morning Britain viewers after a 'ridiculous' comment saw her hit back.

The TV presenter was back on the ITV news programme alongside Richard Madeley.

They were joined by MP Steve Barclay after a report into the government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic was released.

The cross-party report from MPs concluded that serious errors cost thousands of lives.

The 151-page report, from MPs on the Science and Technology Committee and the Health and Social Care Committee, said the UK’s preparation for a pandemic was far too focused on flu, while ministers waited too long to push through lockdown measures in early 2020.

Richard and Susanna challenged Mr Barclay on GMB on Tuesday morning.

Richard told the MP: "We’ve been bombarded with messages on the show today.

"And I have to say the majority of people are surprisingly forgiving, and are actually saying that they understand that the reason for some of the mistakes wasn’t malpractice, but it was scientific ignorance. We didn’t know enough.

"There are others, however, who are extremely angry, particularly those who lost loved ones in care homes who were sent back when they shouldn’t have been.

"But on the whole, you seem to be getting away with it."

Susanna, however, quickly stepped in and disagreed with her co-host.

"No sorry, I take issue with that," she hit back., to which Richard replied: "Do you? Go on."

"There’s a litany of mistakes, Steve Barclay, and I’m afraid you haven’t gotten away with anything, as this report shows.," Susanna said, addressing their guest.

"Too many things were done too late."

And GMB viewers were quick to comment on Susanna's reaction.

Another said: "Susanna Reid," alongside multiple clapping emojis.

"@GMB @richardm5 @susannareid100. Thank you Susanna for taking issue with your colleague Richard's ridiculous comments about the public's views on the government's handling of Covid. As you asserted, they have NOT got away with it!" a third added.

A fourth added: "I cheered Susanna when she said that."

"Well done @susannareid100 they have not got away with it. You and @piersmorgan were there. You tried to hold them to account but they ran away and would not appear on @GMB," another said.
