Susan Hill meets the Guardian book club – podcast

In more than five decades of writing, Susan Hill has turned her hand to short stories, to crime fiction, to non-fiction and to children's fiction.

But it is the ghost story The Woman in Black which has had the most lasting impact on her career. The 1983 novel was turned into a long-running West End play, and has finally been adapted for the big screen by the newly-revived Hammer Films.

Hill reveals the authors and influences that inspired her to take on the Victorian ghost story, and shares her thoughts on why we need to be scared.
