Susan Aitken urges people not to go to George Square tomorrow ahead of planned protests

Susan Aitken has urged people not to go to George Square tomorrow ahead of planned protests.

The Glasgow City Council leader released a statement this evening asking Glaswegians to stay away from the city centre landmark as Scotland continues its battle against coronavirus.

Anti-racism campaigners have planned to gather at George Square at 10.30am tomorrow morning for UN World Refugee Day in a rally organised by Stand Up To Racism Scotland.

Aitken this evening said: "Please do not come to George Square tomorrow – you will put yourself and others at risk.

"We are at a crucial point in our journey out of lockdown and it remains the case that it is still not safe to gather in large crowds. I understand that many will want to make their voices heard. But, for now, I urge you to find alternative means of doing so.

"In normal times, everyone has a right to protest lawfully. It is a bedrock of our democracy and a proud tradition in Glasgow. But just now, just for this short time, please stay safe, keep others safe and stay away."

On Wednesday night Nicola Sturgeon slammed the 'disgraceful' scenes in Glasgow city centre that evening which led to six arrests.

No Evictions Glasgow had planned to protest against the evictions of 300 people onto the streets. However the group had to leave the square amid reports and social media footage of counter-protests from those involved in the National Defence League (NDL).

In reply to MSP Aileen Campbell's earlier Tweet, Sturgeon said: "Disgraceful scenes in Glasgow tonight.

"Racist thugs shame Scotland.

"If they break the law, they should face the full force of it.

"And all of us should unite to say that welcoming refugees and asylum seekers is part of who we are."
