Suryakumar Yadav still learning the 50-over game: Rahul Dravid

CHENNAI: Suryakumar Yadav, with his outrageously inventive yet consistently effective stroke play in T20s, has acquired superstar status in the format and the 'Indian Mr 360' moniker on the back of his dazzlingly dexterous displays. But the going has been tough for him in ODIs, underscored by his consecutive golden ducks in the series against Australia.

India coach Rahul Dravid doesn't want to ring the alarm bells yet, but he feels that when it comes to ODIs, Surya is still learning the ropes. "He has played a lot of T20 cricket in the IPL and then in India colours, but is learning the 50-over game a bit as he has not played enough of it. We need to give him some time and be patient with him," Dravid said.

The batter has managed just 110 runs in his last 10 ODI innings, and averages 25. 47 from the 22 ODIs he has played so far, prompting questions about his ability to adapt to the longer white-ball format. It becomes all the starker, given his heroics in T20Is, where he averages 46. 5 and has a strike-rate of 175.7.

Suryakumar Yadav: T20 superstar and ODI misfit?

Dravid said Surya had played a lot of high-pressure T20 games in the IPL but there is "no equivalent tournament" in domestic one-day cricket. "Even though he hadn't played for India for a really long time, in T20 cricket he played nearly 10 years of the IPL, which as a tournament is almost like international cricket. But he has hardly had similar 50-over game time. All that he has got over the years is Vijay Hazare Trophy," Dravid said.

While pointing out that Surya the ODI player is still an unfinished product, Dravid said he was not too concerned about the batter's dismissals to Mitchell Starc. "He got two first-ball ducks, but both were off pretty good deliveries first up. We need to be a little bit more understanding of the situation," he added.

The team management thinks highly of Surya and sees him as a crucial cog in the run-up to the ODI World Cup in October.

Even on Tuesday, Dravid, with batting coach Vikram Rathour in tow, had an extended discussion with Surya after the 32-year-old had finished his batting session at the Chepauk nets. "We certainly see the upside of him doing well…Surya getting runs in ODIs would be very good for the team," Dravid said.
