Suryakumar Yadav is likely standby for WTC Final

MUMBAI: Dropped from the original Test squad due to poor form, Suryakumar Yadav is likely to now fly to London as a standby for the ICC WTC final against Australia at the Oval from June 7 to 11, TOI has learnt.

“While it hasn’t been officially decided as yet, Surya was recently been told to keep his UK visa ready,” a BCCI source said.

The need to include the Mumbai middle-order batter as a standby emerged after the injury to KL Rahul. Rahul could be ruled out of the IPL and is in danger of missing the WTC final too.

While he was out for three consecutive ducks against the Aussies, ‘SKY’ has rediscovered form in the IPL, scoring three fifties at a fabulous strike rate of 184.13.

Batters Sarfaraz Khan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan and pacers Mukesh Kumar and Navdeep Saini have already been picked as standbys for the WTC final.

Surya has played just one Test for India, at Nagpur against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy February this year, and was out for eight in the only innings in which he batted.
