Survivors of Childers fire lobby parole board against killer's release

Queensland's parole board will receive dozens of victim impact statements from survivors of the Childers backpacker hostel fire as they fight for the man responsible to be kept behind bars.

Fifteen people died at the Palace Backpacker Hostel in June 2000, but Robert Paul Long was only ever charged and convicted of two murders.

He was sentenced to life with a non-parole period of 20 years and is now seeking to be released from prison.

"It's a very sad time for a lot of people," Bundaberg Regional Councillor Bill Trevor said.

"They're reliving it all again because of the parole application."

The former Isis Shire Mayor has collected more than 30 statements from survivors and the families of the victims, which he will deliver to the parole board in Brisbane this morning.

"I will be visiting the secretary of the parole board with Richard Tempest who was one of the survivors," Cr Trevor said.

"I don't want to think about the chance Robert Long has to step back into society.

"His actions and his deeds should see him stay in jail forever."

'Significant public interest'

The parole board said it was aware that the "application by Robert Long is of significant interest to the public, particularly victims and their families".

But it refused to reveal when a decision would be made on the matter.

"It would be inappropriate for the board to make comments in relation to the particulars of an application before it," the statement said.

"The board's purpose is to make independent, transparent, fair and evidence-based parole decisions which appropriately address risk to the community."

Some of the family member's statements that will be provided to the board for consideration come from overseas, including the Netherlands.

"Whether it be families that lost their children and who never came home again," Cr Trevor said.

"There are parents, there are siblings and people that knew the victims."
