Survivor group claims Mother and Baby Homes report is 'hard evidence of genocide'

A survivors group has described the Mother and Baby Homes report as hard evidence of genocide and is demanding prosecutions.

Irish First Mothers says the Attorney General must let the Director of Public Prosecutions consider if individuals or institutions should face trial.

The Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes submitted its final report to Children’s Minister Roderic O’Gorman on Friday.

Testimony from those who lived and worked in 14 mother and baby institutions and four county homes is contained in the document.

IFM spokesman Fintan Dunne slammed the delay in publishing the report – which has taken six years - and said it smacked of a “deny-until-they-die” attitude.

He added: “The Commission report has been mostly complete for a year now. Had the AG done substantial work in that year then delay could have been avoided.

"The Government promises to 'urgently' proceed with the long-delayed legislation to provide for sensitive and appropriate actions at the burial site at Tuam.

“But legislation for the Tuam site is to cover up what happened.

“Only an independent investigation by way of the coroner will suffice.

"We asked the AG to give leave to the DPP to consider prosecutions under the genocide provisions of the International Criminal Court Act, 2006.

"Neither the AG nor the Government will respond. We renew that call today.”
