Surviving The First Night In Your New Home

Moving house can be one of the most stressful things you can do. With so much to think about, organise and prepare for, there’s no end to the list of things you have to keep in mind. And whilst many might think that the hard part is over once they’re physically moved in, it can actually take a while to fully settle into your new home.

And that’s down to the fact that there’s a lot of organisation on the other side too! As well as getting used to a new home, you need to find out where everything goes, what work needs to be done (if any) and what extra things you need. But before you start any of that, you need to be organised for your first night in your new home.

Ensure a smooth move

If you have a lot of stuff, sourcing the right vehicle to transport all your stuff is an important priority. With short term van insurance, you can rent out a larger vehicle that will transport all your stuff in just a few trips. Not only is it time effective, but you will also save money in fuel.

Prepare an Essential First Night Box

We take for granted all the things we need for a comfortable night, and that all comes into immediate focus when we spend the first night at a new home. Without a full fridge, our things scattered around in different boxes and perhaps a bed still needing to be assembled, your first night can feel akin to camping.

To make it as comfortable as possible, you need to think ahead. When packing up your things from your old home, be sure to separate your bedding, duvets, pyjamas, toothbrushes and toiletries so that you don’t have to look through dozens of boxes for the things you need.

Whilst you’re moving into your new home, allocate an hour to pop out to the shop to get some food in. Get in something nice for dinner plus a few essentials like eggs, milk and bread that will make waking up in the morning that bit easier.

Set up utilities in advance

There’s nothing worse than moving in and then finding out there’s no hot water, electricity or gas. Think ahead and start paying for your utilities a few days before you move in; that way, you’ll have all the things you need for a comfortable night.

You might also want to get your Wi-Fi sorted too. It’s likely that you’ll need to find out some things about the area or use Google should anything go wrong in the house, so getting your Wi-Fi sorted in advance is also a good idea. Maybe you can even watch a movie the night you move in!

Create a Cosy Sleeping Area

Make the house really feel like home by investing a bit of time into making your sleeping area as inviting as possible. As you’ll be using it in the more immediate future, leave the other areas of the house for another day and prioritise building your bed, transporting the mattress and getting out some fresh bedding. You’ll need a good night’s sleep after moving!
