Halloween, on October 31, will undoubtedly be different this year, with the pandemic and restrictions on large party gatherings putting a damper on the usual costumed festivities.
One of the changes is the amount of money people are planning to spend on this year's revelries. According to a survey by Tokyo-based market research firm Rakuten Insight Inc., people with plans for Halloween this year will spend an average of 3,938, yen down 608 yen from the same survey in 2019.
The nationwide survey was conducted in September among 1,000 adults between the ages of 20 and 69. Of the 194 respondents who said they have plans for Halloween, 30.4% said they will "have a party at home" -- a 10.3 percentage point increase from last year. And 80% of those who plan to have a party at home is looking to engage in small parties with less than nine participants. When asked about the things they should be cautious of -- with the choice of choosing multiple answers -- 54%, the majority, chose "thorough ventilation."
Additionally, the rate of respondents who answered "visiting a theme park that has a Halloween event" decreased by 9.5 percentage points to 6.7%. There was also a 7.5 percentage point drop to 2.6% in those who said they will "participate in Halloween events such as costume parades and club parties."
