Survey reveals most popular biscuit with a brew

A Toolstation survey has revealed the most popular biscuit accompaniment to a brew in the UK. And it's no surprise that chocolate digestives are the winner by a clear slam dunk, with 13 of the 17 cities assessed having the chocolate treat as their go-to treat.

The 17 cities surveyed were Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Glasgow, Belfast, Nottingham, Birmingham, Norwich, Liverpool, Manchester, Cardiff, Plymouth, London, Bristol, Southampton and Brighton. Regular digestives came in second.

Digestives are the top two choices by far, the rest of the biscuits not boasting figures anywhere near as good.. Rich tea, hobnobs and shortbreads got one vote each from the city-based vote.

The study also compares the choices of tradespeople to the general population, and there is some more variation here. Plumbers go for biscoffs, whereas carpenters and handymen go for gingernuts, but again chocolate digestives and regular digestives take the top spot for tradespeople.

In the study, Yorkshire Tea took the top spot as the UK's favourite brand of the national beverage, with 20% of those surveyed choosing the tea type as their go-to.

It also emerged that engineers like their brews the strongest, with a brewing time of three to four minutes. They also picked a chocolate digestive as the perfect tea accompaniment.

Builders and decorators are not too fussy with the strength of their brews, only allowing 10-30 seconds for brewing time. Bathroom and kitchen fitters aren’t far behind them, with a brew time of 30-45 seconds.

The rest of the tradespeople were in agreement on brew times. All were happy with one to two minutes.

Toolstation surveyed 478 tradespeople and 1,005 of the general population. They asked them everything they preferred about their biscuit of choice with their brew.
