Survey responses show how WalesOnline readers feel about Brexit now as UK's exit from the EU approaches

Over 4,000 people have responded to a WalesOnline survey about Brexit.

It has been over four years since the UK voted to leave the EU. This constant ulcer has poisoned political discord and left Britain a divided nation.

Other important issues have not been given the attention needed because everything has been so focused on re-negotiating the immensely complicated relationship between us and the EU.

Though we officially left back in January, the transition period that has kept us wedded to EU rules and in the union in all but name is now coming to an end.

We asked people whether their opinions had changed in the last four-and-a-half years and who they blamed for the problems that have hit the negotiations.

The results are below — but it is really important to bear in mind that this is not a reflective sample of the whole of Wales. The survey was open to anyone and is therefore likely to attract people who care very deeply about the issue.

These results are also not the definitive view of people in Wales, they are just a reflection of what the people who completed the survey think. Here are the results (a quick note for our app users: the graphics below will not display on the app without you clicking "View Interactive Content").

  • A total of 68% of people responding to the survey said they would vote to stay in the EU if they were given another referendum.
  • A total of 64% of people who responded said they voted to remain in the EU in 2016 - suggesting there has only been a small swing in favour of remain since the referendum
  • Only 18% of respondents said they wanted to leave at any costs even without a trade deal. This is still a completely realistic possibility with negotiations stalled.

  • Depressingly, the one thing almost all people agreed on is that the last four years have been handled badly.
  • The majority of people believe that it is the successive Westminster governments who have bungled the handling of Brexit.
  • Most people have said that their understanding of the benefits or costs of leaving the EU has not changed.

It seems there was real mix of rationale for people whichever way they voted. For about a third of people laws and regulations were the biggest factor but there were several other issues including immigration that informed their votes.
