Survey on Indigenous family violence rates

The federal budget will fund a survey into the prevalence of violence against Indigenous women. (AAP)

The prevalence of family, domestic and sexual violence experienced by Indigenous women and girls will be looked at for the first time through a new survey.

The Morrison government's budget includes $31.6 million, to be spent over five years, to set up an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Personal Safety Survey, to be done by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The measure is part of a $3.4 billion budget package focused on women's safety, economic security, health and wellbeing.

It also includes $26 million for Family Violence Prevention Legal Services to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.

More broadly, Tuesday's federal budget contains $243.6 million to improve economic, social and education outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

More than half of that money will go towards setting up a new Indigenous Skills and Employment Program, to replace existing programs.

Another 2700 places at Indigenous girls academies will be supported and grants will also be available to help improve food security of remote communities.

The Morrison government has also put $4.7 million towards looking at the creation of the Ngurra cultural precinct in Canberra, which will include a national resting place for repatriated ancestral remains.
