Gen Z Distrusts Congress, Presidency, And Tech Companies

U.S. Supreme Court building is seen in Washington

A recent Gallup-Walton Family Foundation survey has revealed that many young Americans, particularly those in Generation Z, have a significant lack of trust in various institutions. The survey, which defines Generation Z as individuals younger than 28, highlights the widespread skepticism among this demographic.

According to the survey findings, approximately half of Generation Z members expressed very little trust in Congress and the presidency. Specifically, 53% indicated low trust in Congress, while 51% felt the same about the presidency. Additionally, 44% of respondents reported having minimal trust in the Supreme Court.

When it comes to other institutions, the survey showed that over a third of Gen Z adults have very little trust in large technology companies (49%), the news media (43%), the criminal justice system (41%), and the police (37%). However, fewer respondents expressed distrust in the military (30%) and the medical system (26%). Notably, only 7% of respondents reported very little trust in science as a whole.

Despite the overall skepticism towards institutions, the survey found that young members of Generation Z generally have faith in their teachers. A majority of current middle school, high school, and college students (59%) indicated high levels of trust in their teachers and other adults at their school.

The survey results shed light on the prevailing attitudes and perceptions of young Americans towards various institutions. The findings suggest a significant level of distrust among Generation Z members, particularly when it comes to governmental bodies and certain sectors of society.
