From today, Universal Credit claimants will see their payments slashed by around £20 a week. It will hit nearly six million people, including 1.9m families with children.
The cut - equivalent to £1,040 a year - will start depending on the day people receive their payments. The £20 uplift was introduced during the coronavirus pandemic in April 2020 to help families cope financially. Boris Johnson has resisted calls to continue with the uplift, saying it was only ever a temporary measure.
Morgan Wild, head of policy at Citizens Advice, said: “We know the extra £20 a week has often meant the difference between empty cupboards and food on the table. The government should do the right thing and keep this vital lifeline."
