Surrey have signed the New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson as an overseas player for seven Vitality Blast and two LV= Insurance County Championship matches.

Surrey lost their overseas player, the Australian Sean Abbott, to injury last week, and Direcor of Cricket Alec Stewart has moved quickly to secure an impressive signing.

Jamieson, the giant seamer, will join up with Surrey after the World Test Championship final next week, in time for the London derby against Middlesex in the Blast on June 25.

He will see out he Blast campaign, as well as playing two Championship matches – against Hampshire at The Ageas Bowl from July 4 and against Somerset at The Kia Oval a week later.

“I’m really excited to get the chance to play some county cricket after the Black Caps tour,” said Jamieson. “Originally I didn’t think this opportunity would be possible with the schedule this year, but with how things have unfolded it’s great to be able to join Surrey and experience both T20 and first-class cricket.

“Playing county cricket is something I’ve always wanted to do in my career, so to have the chance to do so now is awesome. I’ve heard a lot of great things about county cricket, particularly T20 Blast nights at The Kia Oval, and can’t wait to take up the opportunity with Surrey to continue to learn and grow whilst trying my best to contribute to the teams’ success.”

Jamieson was impressive in the drawn first Test against England at Lord’s, and was rested for the second at Edgbaston, with the World Test Championship final in mind. He has a Test average of just 15, and is a highly-sought after T20 player, having been picked up at great expense by Royal Challengers Bangalore this year.

Stewart said: “Kyle is a top quality cricketer and we very much look forward to him joining us when his commitments with New Zealand have finished.”

Jamieson was linked with a move to Hampshire earlier this year.
