Surrey have announced the signing of Australian all-rounder Sean Abbott to play Championship and T20 Blast for the county this summer.

With Hashim Amla filling one of Surrey’s overseas slots across formats for the entire 2021 summer, Abbott will take over from West Indies’ fast bowler Kemar Roach, who is with the county until the Championship fixture against Middlesex at the Kia Oval on May 20.

Abbott will be available for three LV County Championship matches and the entire Vitality Blast group stages.

He has represented Australia in both limited overs formats and had a superb summer for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield, averaging 75 with the bat and taking 17 wickets in seven matches. He has also been a key member of the Sydney Sixers squad that has won the last two Big Bash League titles.

“I’m delighted to have secured the services of Sean for three LV= County Championship matches and all of our T20 group games,” said Surrey Directorr of Cricket Alec Stewart. “His all-round skills and the experience of having won back to back BBL trophies will add real strength to our group.”

Roach, meanwhile, is currently serving his mandatory period in isolation after West Indies’ drawn series with Sri Lanka, and will miss the opening game of the season against Gloucestershire from Thursday.
