Surprising item this Dublin woman always keeps in her handbag

If you are looking for a really easy way to help protect the environment, one Dublin woman has a fantastic tip that takes zero effort.

Pat Kane, a sustainability expert, she says there are two items she always keeps in her handbag - a knife and fork.

Whether you're picking up a salad for your lunch or having a takeaway at a local market, disposable cutlery is usually available. However, this is unnecessary waste that we could easily cut out.

Pat points out, we already use reusable coffee cups and water bottles, so why not cutlery?

“I love having a cutlery set in my bag, but we all have it at home, so you can throw a set in your bag and you’re good to go," she says.

“You’ve to start thinking about all the reusables because you’re trying to avoid rubbish on the go and that’s very important. You start at what you have at home, we all have for life bags or tote bags, so just carry one of them around.

“Just because you’re starting a new sustainable approach doesn’t mean you have to buy a new one, use what you have, the same with coffee cups.

Pat continues: "Not every habit will work for everyone, so maybe carry a coffee up but someone else who has a different lifestyle could see this coffee cup as a burden, so use what you have.

“Even use a mug, have one in the car or the office and adapt the habit you want. The same goes for water bottles.”

Pat Kane is Managing Director of reuzi, a zero waste shop that offers affordable versions of every day essentials that are natural and plastic-free.

reuzi, now has a pop up at the new Brown Thomas, Dundrum.
