Surprise for NHS nurses in Gateshead who find thank-you notes left on their cars

Hard-working hospital nurses were delighted to discover hand-written thank-you notes when they returned to their cars after finishing gruelling shifts.

A number of messages written on different coloured cards had been left underneath the windscreen wipers of vehicles in the staff car park at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, thanking the staff for helping to save lives.

And the thoughtful messages certainly added cheer at a time that NHS medical staff are under such increased pressure in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.

Adorned with hearts, they read: 'Thank you for everything you are doing to save lives'.

Nurses took photographs of the notes, as did Ross Wigham, head of communications for Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, who shared the images on Twitter.

He tweeted: "A really lovely touch in the car park. Thanks to whoever added these little notes to the cars around @QEGateshead - I know they deserve it and how much it means to them. A bit of beauty amid all this fear."

He added of the gesture: "The nurses really loved it in such worrying times."

It is believed the thank-you notes were written by two local sisters who are themselves in the process of training to be nurses elsewhere.

The QE Gateshead NHS trust itself tweeted its own thanks, saying: "The simplest gesture has gone a long way and brightened up their day during a difficult time."
