Surprise farewell presentation for Marian Dixon as she stands down from Kirkcudbright Fishermen's Mission role

Boat crews and staff at Kirkcudbright Harbour staged a surprise farewell presentation for their Fishermen’s Mission superintendent.

Marian Dixon has stepped down from her role of providing support and advice to fishermen and their families.

Also in attendance was Marian’s replacement Grant Wilson, the newly appointed Fishermen’s Mission representative for the Solway Firth.

Marian, 73, who lives in Kirkcudbright, was given gifts funded by fishermen’s donations.

“I was totally flabbergasted by what they gave me,” Marian told the News after the ceremony.

“It’s hard to put into words how grateful I am.

“The guys have been brilliant and always made me feel that I was welcome.

“It was a true privilege to have the role for the period of time I was there.”

Marian added: “The Fishermen’s Mission never had a port officer living in the town before.

“I feel that having somebody local that fishermen could speak to whenever they needed to made a difference.”

Kirkcudbright harbourmaster Robbie Garside said: “The fishermen wanted to club together to show their appreciation for the work Marian did.

“We collected the money in the office for the presents.”

Regional harbourmaster Will Jones, from Gatehouse, added: “The Fishermen’s Mission is the only charity providing active and retired fishermen and their families emergency support as well as practical, financial emotional and spiritual support.

“Marian has worked tirelessly in this regard during her tenure in Kirkcudbright.”

He added: “Reverend Marian Dixon, to give her full title, is also very active at Kirkcudbright Parish Church.

“She is a huge asset to the community.”
