Surgery a possibility for Martin Prado, Mattingly says

Martin Prado's chances of coming back this season may be in jeopardy.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly said Thursday that Prado's injured knee has not progressed and surgery may be a possibility.

Mattingly said the team could make a decision as early as Friday.

"There will probably be a decision about what's going to happen next," Mattingly said. "We'll probably know [Friday] about that."

It's been a frustrating season of injury setbacks for Prado, who signed a three-year, $40 million extension with the Marlins in the offseason. Prado was placed on the disabled list on July 18 with a right knee sprain.

Prado also had two previous stints on the DL with a right hamstring injury he suffered in March while playing in the World Baseball Classic.

Prado has played in only 37 games this season, batting .250 with two home runs, 11 extra-base hits and 12 RBIs.

In addition to Prado, the Marlins have two more starting infielders currently on the DL _ J.T. Riddle and Justin Bour.

Riddle (left biceps tendinitis) had an MRI that revealed some tendinitis and said he is getting a second opinion on Monday.

Miguel Rojas (left shoulder) avoided a return trip to the DL and was back in the starting lineup on Thursday against the Reds.
