Surgeons' Hall Museums announce two exciting new galleries set to open Autumn 2020

One of the oldest Museums in Scotland is taking steps into the future with two brand new exhibits set to open next year.

Part of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Surgeons' Hall Museums opened in 1832 in its current location on Nicholson Street.

These two exciting new exhibits are in the second phase of their re-development, with the building undergoing a major £4.4 million Heritage Lottery funded revamp back in 2015.

The new galleries will be called 'Body Voyager' and will explore the rise in technology in medicine, both computerised and robotic.

The exhibit will feature computer technology which visitors can get involved with and interact with; including working surgical instruments, human specimens and audio-visual presentations to create an engaging and fun experience.

Visitors will be taken on a journey through the human body, looking into the way modern technology has changed and is still changing the course of surgery and patient care.

The aim of the exhibit is to get people thinking about the impact modern technology has had on the medical world and how it is advancing.

Director of Heritage Lottery, Chris Henry, said:

"It is clear from our evaluations that there is a deep and unwavering interest in the human body and what happens to it during illness. Therefore, we feel that it is now time to look at the future of surgery and try to address changes that have taken place since the opening of the museum in 2015.

"In four short years much has changed in terms of the use of computerised and robotic technology in medicine. An exponential rise in the use of robotics has led us to envisage new galleries to consider the changes this will bring."

The galleries will have four zones: an introduction, the head, the torso and the limbs. Each area will explore the extent to which robotics has been introduced into some surgical procedures already as well as looking at the overall development of equpiment.

The scheduled date for the exhibit to open is September 11 2020.
