Surgeon sentenced to prison for deadly liposuction procedure

Feb. 04--A former Encino cosmetic surgeon was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison for administering a lethal cocktail of drugs to a 61-year-old woman during a 10-hour liposuction procedure.

Ehab Aly Mohamed was convicted Jan. 21 of one count each of involuntary manslaughter and elder abuse for killing one patient and injuring another, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Mohamed, 48, gave Sharon Carpenter a toxic mixture of lidocaine, fentanyl and oxycodone during an Aug. 22, 2010, procedure in his office, prosecutors said.

Months earlier, 77-year-old Zackie Handy underwent an hours-long liposuction procedure in Mohamed's office and suffered lasting health issues that amounted to elder abuse, prosecutors said.

In a bid to strip Mohamed of his license, the Medical Board of California accused him of failing to inform patients of the risks of treatments, lacking the proper training and having inadequate staff and equipment at the time of his procedures.

State medical officials barred him in 2010 from performing cosmetic surgeries, and Mohamed agreed to surrender his medical license in 2013.

Mohamed was previously convicted of forgery and burglary in a separate matter.

In addition to the prison term, Mohamed was ordered by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic to pay about $5 million to one victim's family in accordance with a previous civil judgment.
