A south Dublin voter accidentally gave his preferences a ringing endorsement when his wedding ring fell into the ballot box and had to be fished out by a surgeon.
The man was casting his vote at a polling station on Zion Road, Rathgar at around 1pm this afternoon.
His wedding ring slipped off his finger and fell into the ballot box as he was returning his vote.
Luckily a surgeon was in the polling station at the same time and managed to fish out the ring using the aerial from the returning officer's car.
Labour Senator Kevin Humphreys was casting his vote at the same time and shared details of the hilarious story on social media.
He said: "A bit of excitement at the polling station on Zion Rd, Rathgar.
"Poor fella’s wedding ring slipped off his finger into the ballot box! Rapturous applause when a surgeon managed to fish it out with the ariel [sic] off the returning officer’s car."
Fellow voters were quick to see the funny side with many replying to the Dublin Bay South candidate's story, remarking that such a situation could "only happen in Ireland".
One man joked: "Thats a sign for a ring of change."
Another quipped: "That’s taking the concept of the ‘single transferable vote’ a little too seriously!"
While another woman added: "This election may ruin many a marriage yet."
And Senator Humphreys later revealed that another voter accidently dropped their driving licence into a ballot box in Harold's Cross.
He said: "Someone has dropped their driving licence in with their ballot in Harold’s Cross. No such luck fishing it out this time so they’ll have to wait until tomorrow to get it back."
Polling stations across the country remain open until 10pm tonight.
