Surge in the number of coronavirus patients across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases has surged across Nottingham and the wider county, new figures from Public Health England show.

There are now 34 patients diagnosed with the virus in the city, up from 22, while figures for the county have increased to 60, a jump from 45 on Saturday, March 21.

It comes as the number of patients nationally increased to 5,683, with 281 deaths. Two people were confirmed to have died after contracting the condition in Nottingham yesterday, although there were no new reports from Nottingham University Hospitals Trust today, March 22.

During his daily press conference on Sunday, March 22, Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned the Government is ready to impose tougher restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus if people do not follow the guidance on social distancing.

The Prime Minister insisted that he did not want to close down access to parks and playgrounds because of the benefits to people's mental and physical wellbeing.

But amid reports of crowds flocking to parks, beaches and beauty spots across the country, he said the Government was ready to impose the kind of "tougher" measures adopted in other European countries if people did not behave responsibly.
