The number of British people applying for an Irish passport has surged since the Brexit vote, according to figures.

Some 81,000 applications for passports were made from Britain in 2017, compared to 46,000 applicants in 2015 - the year before the Brexit vote, the BBC reported.

Since 2016, London's Irish embassy has issued more than 176,000 passports, 10 times more than any other office.

Neale Richmond, chair of the Irish Senate's Brexit committee, said staff at the embassy were expecting 2018 to be their busiest ever year.

“Since the people of the UK voted, narrowly, to leave the EU in 2016 we have seen a continuing rise in the number of applications for Irish passports in the UK,” he said.

British people with an Irish parent, or in certain circumstances an Irish grandparent, are entitled to become Irish citizens.

An application for a standard 10-year passport costs £71.

There has also been a surge in applications from Northern Ireland, where people have an automatic right to Irish citizenship.
