Surfer taken to hospital with broken leg after Tynemouth beach fall

A surfer was given pain relief on the beach after breaking her leg in a fall.

The 24-year-old woman had fallen off her surfboard and suffered a painful suspected fracture to her left leg below the knee.

The woman was being helped by RNLI lifeguards at Tynemouth Longsands on Sunday when the Coastguard was alerted to the accident and requested help from the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB).

A total of nine Brigade members arrived on scene just after 12.45pm and provided pain relief to the casualty who appeared to be in a great deal of discomfort.

Working with the lifeguards, the casualty was then placed onto a stretcher and carried to the south ramp at the beach.

The injured surfer was transferred into the care of paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service who took her to North Tyneside General Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

A spokesperson from the TVLB said: "We wish the casualty a speedy recovery from what was a rather painful looking injury."
