Surfer suffers serious injury after shark attack

A man was hospitalised in a serious but stable condition after suffering serious injury in a suspected shark attack Monday afternoon.

The man, believed to be aged in his 20s, was surfing at Crescent Head Beach around 4.30pm when the shark attacked, police were told.

Bystanders assisted the man to shore before he was treated by paramedics at the scene.

"It was a significant bite and the man suffered serious injuries to his arm as a result. He was stabilised on scene and then flown to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition," a spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said.

Officers from Mid North Coast Police District will liaise with the Department of Primary Industry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The beach has been closed by Surf Life Saving NSW.

People are urged to follow safety advice from Surf Life Saving NSW and by visiting the Department of Primary Industry's website and the SharkSmart app.
