Surfer says he 'could be better' after escaping shark attack with minor injuries

Birubi Beach at Port Stephens has been closed until further notice following the shark attack.

Authorities have closed Birubi Beach in New South Wales until further notice after a surfer said he was bitten by a shark.

Police said the 31-year-old man was surfing at Birubi Beach, Port Stephens, about 9:30am when he was bitten on his foot.

The surfer managed to swim to shore before he contacted emergency services.

Police said he escaped with minor puncture wounds to his foot.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was taken to John Hunter Hospital as a precaution.

After the attack the man told the ABC he "could be better".

The beach is closed until further notice, as police work with the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries.

A department spokesperson said a shark biologist will assess photographs of the wounds to try to determine the species responsible for the attack.
