Surfer's joy after wedding ring lost on Gower beach is found by local with a metal detector

A surfer lost his gold ring in the sea after travelling 200 miles to ride the waves - and was amazed when it was found by a stranger buried in the sand.

Holidaymaker Simon Rumble, 48, put out an appeal for help from anyone with a metal detector after losing his precious ring.

Simon travelled from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, to Gower for his first taste of the sea in months - and was left heartbroken when he returned to the dry land and discovered his wedding band was missing.

But Andrew Phillips leapt into action with his metal detector when he saw an online appeal asking for help to find the ring of "great sentimental value".

Kindhearted Andrew headed to the coastline at 5.30am in a bid to help with the search.

He started at low tide at dawn - and realised it was a near-mission impossible on the huge beach of shifting sand.

He said: "I really didn't know where to start and said to another metal detectorist 'It's like finding a needle in a haystack.'

"After searching low tide for four hours, only to find bottle tops and ring pulls, I decided to walk back towards high tide."

But he started to lose hope after spending hours searching for the vanished jewellery.

Andrew then decided to head towards the rocks at the side of Caswell Bay beach - and got a signal from his machine.

Simon's wife said the discovery of the lost ring was like 'winning the lottery' (Wales News Service)

He said: "I had a good signal but not a gold signal. I dug about 8ins and to my amazement there it was."

Andrew was then able to reunite Simon with his ring before he headed home from his holidays.

Andrew added: "He has been reunited with it and was very pleased. I am chuffed I found it. I hadn't found gold in a while."

Simon said: "I'm just delighted - what a thing to do to help someone. It means a lot to me personally."

Simon's wife Sue said: "This is a miracle. Thank you so much! We feel like we have won the lottery."
